Book of the Month

Going along with my dog powered sports theme, I picked "Ski Spot Run" by Matt Haakenstad and John Thompson as my Book of the Month. And know, your eyes do not deceive you, the book looks slightly chewed on. Heffner sometimes chews on random things when he's home alone and feeling less than optimally exercised.:oP The book is still easily readable, just well "loved" by the big boy!

On to the book! I really think that this is a great book to read if you're starting into the dog powered sports with and specifically skijoring. The authors sprinkle side notes from "characters" (a few comical people and a dog) throughout the book that give some first hand experiences that make reading it all the more enjoyable. The book covers the basic equipment required and the differences between the different styles of harnesses for dogs and people. It goes over a general background on how the sport got started and where it's at at the time of the publishing. There's sections on training techniques as well as the commands with training recommendations for each. They also touch on the many warm weather dog powered sports that you can get involved in that carry over from skijoring. All of this is wrapped up with a recommended reading list. It's a fun book to read and is really helpful for someone just getting started. I think it helps get you really excited about the sport!

We have heard of a dog eared book, but . . .

P.S. - Actually, we had to re-order our Scott Ski book about his wild Siberian Taz - because our dogs ate the book. Scott loved the excuse!
